Physical SIM vs eSIM: What’s the Difference?

Modified on Mon, 5 Jan at 12:03 PM

When you set up your Parrot Mobile service, you’ll have the option of a physical SIM card or an eSIM. If you’re unsure which one is best for you, we’ve provided information below to help you make a decision.

What is a Physical SIM Card?

Physical SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards have been around for years and are supported across various devices. You insert a small, removable card into your mobile device to connect your service.

Advantages of a Physical SIM Card:

  • You can easily swap the SIM card between devices
  • Compatibility with older or budget-friendly devices

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is the electronic version of a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your device, allowing you to activate your service without a physical card.

Advantages of an eSIM:

  • No need to wait for shipping or insert a SIM card
  • Ideal for newer phones designed to use eSIMs (e.g., the latest iPhones)
  • Perfect for travelers or those who want multiple lines on one device

Things to Keep in Mind When Using an eSIM:

  • To switch to a new device, you will need to be issued a new eSIM
  • Not all devices support eSIMs
