Trouble with Calls, Texts, or Data: Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Modified on Mon, 5 Jan at 12:05 PM

It can be really frustrating when you are unable to make calls, send texts, or use your data. Luckily, most of these issues are pretty easy to resolve.

We’ve created a guide to help you with a few quick steps that will help you troubleshoot issues with your iOS or Android device.

General Device Troubleshooting Steps:

No matter your device, start with these basic steps first:

  • Verify your plan is active – Within your account settings, you can confirm if your plan is active.
  • Restart your device – Temporary issues can often be resolved with a simple reboot.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on/off – Doing this for 10 seconds helps to refresh your connection.

iOS Troubleshooting (iPhone)

If you're using an iPhone, try these steps:

  1. Check Network Settings

Go to Settings > Cellular and ensure Cellular Data is turned on.

  2. Update Carrier Settings

Go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, you’ll see a prompt to install it.

  3. Reset Network Settings

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will erase saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, so be prepared to reconnect.

  4. Ensure iMessage and FaceTime are Enabled (for texts)

Go to Settings > Messages and Settings > FaceTime to confirm both are turned on.

Android Troubleshooting

If you're using an Android device, follow these steps:

  1. Confirm Mobile Data is Enabled

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network and ensure data is turned on.

  2. Update Preferred Network Type

Go to Settings > Mobile Network > Preferred Network Type and select 4G/5G Auto if available.

  3. Reset Network Settings

Go to Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth.

  4. Check for Software Updates

Go to Settings > System > Software Update and install any available updates.

If you're experiencing issues due to no or low signal reception but have access to Wi-Fi, you can make calls using Wi-Fi Calling. This can help improve call quality in areas with weak cellular coverage. To learn more about how to set this up, check out our guide on Wi-Fi Calling.
